MAYOR CALLS FOR CALM IN WAKE OF VIOLENCE

CLLR GODFREY SAYS MAJORITY OF MONEYMORE RESIDENTS DESERVE MORE

- By ALISON COMYN

MAYOR of Drogheda Frank Godfrey is calling for calm in the town and is reassuring residents that everything is being done to stop the lawlessness we are now experiencing.

Following a walk-about and meeting with several residents, Mayor Godfrey said that tension was high in the Moneymore area after the recent violent incidents, and many are concerned that violence in town could escalate if not resolved.

‘I am especially concerned for senior citizens and those with young families who are living near trouble-zones, as they are telling me that they are fearful, worried and uneasy as a result of the recent violent acts in town,’ said the Independent councillor.

‘ This is an absolute nightmare for residents, the majority of whom are very decent people.

This cannot go on and we will not tolerate these unlawful activities in the town of Drogheda.’

Mayor Godfrey is urging Louth County Council to upgrade the estate by refurbishing vacant houses, installing better street lighting, and building a state-of-the-art community centre in Moneymore.

‘ There are great community groups in Moneymore who are working with children and adults and these must be supported,’ he said.

‘ There are three CCTV cameras on the estate, but they are not working. These must be repaired and monitored to check on any anti-social or criminal behaviour in the estate.

He added that drugs seem to be at the heart of this recent violence, which saw gang warfare employing bombs, guns and physical attacks in town, and this needs to be addressed by the relevant authorities.

“This trouble must be brought to an end, and as Mayor, I wish to reassure the people of the town that something is being done to put a stop to it.’

Mayor Godfrey went on to commend the Gardaí for their constant and consistent police work, and said it was reassuring to see the Special Response Unit with a presence in the town.
