Podge still big part of Boyne Rovers life

-

CAME across an interview with Podge Boylan from 30 years ago when he was contemplating retirement.

Boyne Rovers were to honour their long serving goalkeeper with a testimonial match following 15 years with the club.

Still, he admitted he might be going on for a while . “If I come back this time it will be a miracle. Four or five times before I said I would retire and I came back,” confessed Podge.

Boylan’s future was thrown into turmoil some months before when he was involved in an accident outside the Parkview clubhouse and injury, mainly to his ankle and hip, looked set to force him out of the game.

He was one of the most outstanding players in junior football in the town and landed the likes of two Gilligan Cups and five player of the year awards.

But it’s his care of the Parkview sod that has made him a very familiar face around the place in the past number of dcades.

Long may Podge be part of the soccer set up in town.
