Boyne athletes feted for their achievements

-

BOYNE AC had athletes nominated for Louth Athlete of the Year in every category at Friday night’s Athletics Louth Star Awards and ultimately six of them were successful in achieving one of those coveted awards.

Dundalk’s Crowne Plaza Hotel played host to the big night in the year for the 11 Louth-based athletics clubs and there was plenty of glitz and glamour among the capacity crowd.

The night began with a fabulous meal, followed by a welcome from Athletics Louth chairman Micheal Mulligan and President of Athletics Ireland Georgina Drumm, who is also a Louth native.

The guest of honour on the night was Eve McCrystal who is an Irish Paralympic cyclist - competing as a sighted pilot - who gave some encouraging words of advice to the young athletes aspiring to achieve their own Olympic dreams.

The ceremony itself then commenced with the presentation of certificates to all those athletes who had won National medals throughout the year, and the huge numbers collecting certificates is a sure sign of the immense talent throughout the Wee County.

The individual awards presentations followed, where the criteria for the awards, as set out by the Louth County Board, allows each club to nominate an athlete in varying age groups in both Track & Field and Cross-Country categories, with 14 overall winners decided by the County Board based on a points system.

With bated breath and anticipation, the athletes nominated by thier clubs were called to the stage and presented with certificates to acknowledge thier nomination, with the name of the overall winner then appearing on the screen behind them.

Boyne AC had athletes nominated for Louth Athlete of the Year in each category and the successful six were Shola Lawrence and Oliver Carolan (both Track & Field), Shola Lawrence and Lorcan Forde Dunne (Cross-Country) and Shea O’Donnell and Eimear Cooney for their particular age groups.

The other Boyne nominees were Saran Meite, Aaron Fennell, Euan Canniffe, Caer NiGhibne, Tara Meier and Ruarcan O’Gibne (track & field) and Caer Ni Ghibne and Killian McLoughlin in their age categories.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one night, Boyne AC then went on to win the title of Best Track & Field Club 2018 for the third year in a row, and with barely time to leave the stage they had to get back up again as they were presented with the award for Best Club in Cross-Country 2018 also, again for the third year in a row!

Presentations were then made to those Louth athletes who competed internationally in 2018, including Boyne AC’s Amy McTeggart and Tara Meier, and - much to his surprise - the ‘Performance of the Meet’ Cup was awarded to Oisin O’Gibne for his outstanding performance in the County Track & Field Championships.

The disco afterwards had some great displays of award-winning dance moves, and as the night drew to a close there were some tired but happy faces - all eager to make sure that Boyne AC continues its successes for another year.

The club congratulated the hard-working athletes on their successes and fgave a special mention to their families and the coaches who helped deliver all the great results during the year. East Meath United AGM and awards
