Campbell wins Senior Athlete of the Year award

DUNLEER AC’s Garry Campbell has been honoured with the Senior Athlete of the Year title following the Louth Athletics Sports Awards, held in Dundalk’s Crowne Plaza Hotel last Friday night.

Campbell scooped the award after a magnificen­t year on the road, on the track and in cross-country, culminatin­g in victory in the Louth Senior Men’s Cross-Country Championsh­ip over 10,000m in a time of 31:31 a fortnight ago.

His Athlete of the Year award was accepted on his behalf by Dunleer AC chairwoman Jacqueline Matthews.

In the Juvenile section, Dunleer’s Edward Mc Entee was the winner of the Track & Field award in the 16/17 Boys category and Aeyla Orr was similarly honoured in that category for girls.

Cormac Greene won the Cross-Country award in the nine to 12 age group, in which Declan Mc Entee, Liene Kaugare, Karlis Kaugars, Erinn Leavy, Conor Brennan, Rebecca Baldwin, Neasa Reilly, James Russell, Cliodhna Reilly and Cormac Greene were also nominated.

Meanwhile, many of Dunleer AC’s juveniles had success at Leinster and National level last season and the older ones have been selected for squad training.

Karlis Kaugars has been selected for the Irish National throws squad, having won three gold medals at the National Championsh­ips last summer in the discus, javelin and shot putt. His sister Liene has been selected for the Leinster throws squad, while Neasa Reilly, Conor Matthews and Peter Meegan were picked for the Leinster Endurance squad and Anthony Dillon has been selected for the Leinster Sprints squad.

Karen Costello, the 2018 Louth Senior Cross-Country champion and Leinster Novice silver medallist, was selected to represent Ireland in a Masters Internatio­nal in Swansea last weekend and she did not disappoint, finishing second Irish woman home and helping the Irish team to the silver medals.

NUMBERS drawn in last week’s Duleek AFC/SBG FC lotto were 15, 19, 21, 28 and the six €20 prizes went to C Lindsey, C McCormack, R Hynes, K Bissett, J Bird and Robbie Daly.

The draw takes place every Thursday at 8.30pm in the Duleek AFC clubhouse, tickets are available from committee members and the jackpot stands at €8,000.

No jackpot winner

NUMBERS drawn in last week’s Seneschals­town GAA Club lotto for a jackpot of €2,700 were 2, 3, 9, 12 and the five €25 winners were Mal Hickey, Mick Farrelly, Michael Collins, Colm Lyons and Pat Clarke.
