- By HUBERT MURPHY

A First Responder, who was taking part in the annual Drogheda Homless Aid sleepout on West Street, was praised for her quick action after a shocking attack on a Town Centre security guard on Saturday night.

A gang of youths are believed to behind the incident that saw the man knocked to the ground, suffering a head wound in the process. They fled the scene immediately.

The incident, just after 7.30pm, was witnessed by shocked locals, including a group taking part in the sleep out, right across the road.

One of the volunteers, Mikaela, ran to the injured man and provided First Aid before an ambulance arrived.

Gardai also attended the scene.

Drogheda’s mayor, Frank Godfrey, who was part of the sleepout team, was shocked by the incident.

‘What is the town coming to,’ he told the Drogheda Independent, as the injured man was carried from the scene.

‘ There are gangs of youths roaming the town and it has become much more visual in recent weeks. This was a terrible incident, a shocking attack on a man doing his job on a Saturday evening.

‘It’s time to take action on these people. There is too much anti-social behaviour on our main street and it must be tackled,’ the shocked mayor remarked.

He praised Mikaela for her role in assisting the man, displaying a civic spirit that he feels needs to be brought back to the town.

‘We had wonderful volunteers out collecting for the Homeless Aid and they had to see this. That’s not right,’ he added.
