Sadness at death of Sister Helen O’Brien MMM

SISTER Helen O’Brien (right) was born in Fermoy, Co. Cork in 1938 and joined MMM in 1958. After profession she trained as a doctor in UCD, qualifying in 1965. Her first assignment was to Nigeria in 1967, where she served for about 15 years in a number of mission hospitals.

Sr. Helen briefly joined the Cistercian community in Glencairn in 1984 but later returned to MMM. She was assigned to the Motherhous­e, where she helped with various duties. She also cared for her elderly mother. She moved to Dublin in 1997. She helped with research projects and was also involved with pro-life work.

After a number of years of ill health Sister Helen was admitted to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in July 2018. She moved to the nursing facility, Áras Mhuire in August and died there peacefully on 29 November 2018.
