National champs held by Mary’s

-

ST MARY’S DS finished a very creditable fourth at the recent FAI Post-Primary Schools First Year National Futsal Finals at Waterford IT.

The Drogheda school showed amazing skill and courage to qualify for the final stages of a high-class tournament and certainly held their own against schools from Kerry, Donegal and eventual winners St Louis Kiltimagh from Mayo.

Battle-hardened by a competitive provincial qualifier, St Mary’s were edged out in a nine-goal thriller by Mercy Secondary School from Mounthawk, but while that result scuppered their title hopes, they dusted themselves down for a final-round clash with the Kiltimagh boys.

In another entertaining encounter St Mary’s opened a 2-0 lead and looked to be on course to soften the champions’ cough a little.

However, like true champs St Louis came storming back to nick a draw and in the end St Mary’s were grateful to goalkeeper Oisin Brennan for a marvellous late save.
