Councillor amazed at support for 50% pay increase - for local councillors!

- Dear Sir, Cllr Wayne Harding. Slane,

I am amazed with the cross party support for a 50% increase in payment to locally elected county councillors. The front line service people in this country must be fuming?

They are the teachers, nurses and guards and all first responders. I believe putting yourself forward as a local representative is a vocation and one that comes with enormous pressure and criticism. But is a guard a nurse or a teacher any different? Of course local councillors are not earning the money that people might think we are being paid and are in fact drastically under paid for the work we do.

But we entered public life of our own free will. Spare a thought for the newly qualified teacher, guard ,nurse, fireman or any first responders who realise that their pay doesn’t keep up with their rent. It would be far better in the current environment of struggle to acknowledge the work of a local councillor than to bestow from a high a proposed 50% increase in wage which I believe is pie in the sky, or announce that nurses, guards, teachers, firemen and all first responders get a 50% increase as well.
