Stamullen STAMULLEN ROAD CLUB
The annual Christmas Poker Classic held in Whytes of Stamullen on Friday November 30th last by the Stamullen Road Club was a huge success. This event was, in a way, shadowed with a little sadness and grief, as it was the first Christmas Poker Classic organised and run by the Stamullen Road Club since the unexpected and tragic passing of Gaybo Hward back in February. The Secretary of the local club and the beloved widow of the late Gaybo, Kay Howard, has sent me on the following regarding the Poker Classic. `There was wonderful support from all our regular players plus a few new ones. Special mention for the many people who contributed by buying the Poker tickets but also a big thank you to the people who brought along gifts for the raffle on the night. We thank Kathleen Gough for selling the Raffle tickets on the night.
Finally, congratulations to the winner of the Poker, Paudge Howard from Bellewstown, 2nd Pat Fogarty from Drogheda and 3rd Carmel Finnegan from Stamullen. Finalists, Cepta Moss, Tommy McDonnell, Frankie Lynch and Denis Craven`.
VINCENT DE PAUL
In the run up to Christmas, the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be seeking voluntary donations across the parish. The Society carry out marvellous work throughout the whole year and at this time of the year they are particularly active supporting those who may need help the most. Please help in any way you can with donating to this wonderful and generous cause in this the Season of Goodwill.
KNOW YOUR PARISH
The following article appeared in the pages of the Drogheda Independent in March of 1945. `Remarkable find in tree. An oak cross was found inside the bowl of an old beach tree at Lisdornan cross near Bellewstown by employees of Mr John Tallan recently. When the tree was cut and split the workmen were astonished to see a black cross in the heart of the bowl. As the tree is believed by experts to be over 200 years old, it is thought the cross might have been nailed to the outside of the tree, or set into the bark when it was much younger and that the bowl expanded with the years and the cross became enclosed inside.
Crosses are even still painted or erected at the scenes of tragedies along Irish roads and it is not unlikely that this cross had a similar significance a century or more ago. The tree is outside an old house which is believed to have been the residence of the famous Napper Tandy`.
The old house, that is aforementioned in this article from 1945, was the former Lisdornan House, which was situated at the eastern end of the road known locally as the Avenue, which runs from Raholland cross to Lisdornan. The house was demolished shortly after the discovery of this black cross inside the old beach tree. Napper Tandy was a frequent visitor to this house during the 1790`s and there is a strong local-lore ale that he in fact resided here for a while. Tandy`s wife was the daughter of James Jones of Whitehall Platten, she passed away in December 1919 and was laid to rest in the nearby Church of Ireland in Julianstown. Napper Tandy was presented with a gold box and the Freedom of Drogheda in 1792, however, due to his association with the Rebellion of 1798, this freedom was revoked by the Drogheda Corporation. He is the only person ever to be disfranchised of that honour.
