Nick’s mourning the great Gerry

ST NICHOLAS GFC lost a dedicated founder member last week with the death of Clones born Gerry McKeown (pictured).

‘Gerry was one of the founding members of St Nicholas GFC and lay the groundwork for the great club we have today. RIP,’ a club statement remarked.

St. Nicholas G.F.C. was founded in the Holy Family meeting room on 12th December 1976 and affiliated in January 1977 with the following officers elected: Rev. F. Farrelly C.C., hon. president; Chairman Gerry McKeown; vice chairman, Kit Cahill; sec. Sean Carolan; ass. sec. S. Buckley; treasurer Jimmy Pentony.

They played their first game at junior level in early 1983 against Lannleire and in 1987, won the Junior 2 C’ship, much to Gerry’s delight, beating Na Piarsaigh 2-12 to 0-8 under skipper Philip Kirwan.

Gerry, from Ballsgrove, passed away on 27th December in his 94th year.

Beloved husband of the late Betty, he is sadly missed by his loving family, Cathy, Tony and John, son in law Noel, daughters-in-law Angela and Maria, grandchild­ren Niamh, Ciaran, Conor, Áine, Eimear, Aisling, Kevin and Katie, great-grandchild­ren Daniel, Finn, Lauren, Abbey and Megan, sisters-in-law Mona, June, Angela and Madge, brother in law Denis, cousin Una, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

His funeral was Monday to Holy Family Church, Ballsgrove with burial afterwards in Calvary Cemetery.
