Duleek go under in Meath s/f
DRUMCONRATH won their way into the Meath Junior A final when seeing off Duleek by 3-8 to 1-7 in the semi-final in Navan.
Duleek showed up well in the first moiety when they did enough to lead (1-4 to 1-1 ) at the interval, despite having less opportunities than their opponents. The heavier Drumconrath team lost many chances of scoring during this period and although Duleek had the wind advantage it did not look all that much assistance as it had died down considerably due to the rain.
In the circumstances, one was inclined to give the Duleek boys an excellent chance of carrying off the spoils in the second moiety. Their forwards seemed the better equipped on the first half display, and their defence, in which Sean Lane was outstanding, looked sound enough.
In the second half, however, the North Meath players proved the superior side, and it was only a courageous and inspired display of goalkeeping by the Duleek custodian L. Owens that kept the scores down. Others to play well for the losers were S. Lane, D. Geraghty, J. Curley, B. Lenehan, O Shanley, S. Clinton, D. Brien and D. Brennan.
Drumconrath were the better team on the day, and if their forwards could function for the full hour as they did in the concluding stages on Sunday, then they would be a match for any team in the junior grade. Their first half display showed that they could be most extravagant in this connection, but with a little more accuracy here their players’ have the style of which champions are made. Their most conspicuous players were P. Dalton. J. Brady, Nicholas Callan. Noel Callan, T. McCullough . J. Crawley, J. Callan and Tom Conlon , the former Louth inter-county player, who came on as a substitute in the second period.
