BID hopeful council will ‘Love Drogheda’

- By ALISON COMYN

“ALONE we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

This is the sentiment behind the comprehensive and practical proposal made by a consortium of local rate-payers to Louth County Council, for a Drogheda Business Improvement District (BID scheme).

Flying under the banner ‘Love Drogheda’, the aim is to make the town a great place to work, live and socialise, but as the organisers say, the success of the five-year plan is entirely dependent on collaboration with Drogheda’s business community, Louth County Council and voluntary organisations.

“There is a renewed optimism and confidence in the Drogheda business communitym and Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann 2018 demonstrated how our people and Council can come together and create a very special moment in time for our city,” says Geoff Fitzpatrick from the Drogheda BID Proposal Working Group.

“This proposal has come together with a love and pride for Drogheda, and we believe by working together we can create a very positive and progressive momentum that will get stronger over the proposed 5-year mandate. We want to create a vibrant, buzzy, enterprising city.”

The lengthy document contains detailed submissions for a wide-range of initiatives to improve the town, not just in the retail and tourism industry, but in infrastructure, planning, safety and local economy.

A five-year Enterprise Development Plan looks at actions to make Drogheda more attractive to set up a SME. A five-year tourism plan will review existing tourism infrastruture, marketing and promotion, with plans for more hotel rooms, a super tourist information centre and illumination of the historic buildings and bridges at night.

The new branding will be rolled out on social media and the proposals will be voted on in the coming months, with projects beginning in early summer if successful.
