ST OLIVER’S CC pupil Kate got an early Christmas present this month when captaining her country at an U-16 basketball tournament in Belarus.

Ireland, ranked as a ‘B’ nation in Europe, took on three ‘A’-ranked countries - Poland, Lithuania and the hosts - and Kate (15) bagged 16 points against Poland before being rewarded with the captaincy for the match with Lithuania.

At club level she plays for for Drogheda Sparks who lie second in the U-16 North East League. She also won the Leinster Schools U-16 shot putt this year and scooped All-Ireland bronze.
