Horgan joy as Town win twice in four days

TRINITY DONAGHMEDE DROGHEDA TOWN 0 2

DROGHEDA Town boss Robbie Horgan couldn’t have been happier as his team backed up last Monday night’s crushing league win with another victory on Friday evening at Fr Collins Park.

Looking to bounce back from a 6-2 home defeat against Doddervale in their previous outing, Horgan’s men did just that when scoring six without reply at DIFE against the LSL Major Division’s bottom club Clondalkin Celtic.

The 6-0 victory lifted the Marian Park side to eighth in the Major Sunday table, with Michele Corsi striking twice for the hosts and their other goals coming from Darren Kavanagh, Dean Haggins, Marty Walsh and Sam Reilly.

Then on Friday the Boynesiders travelled to face Trinity Donaghmede in the Kevin Nugent Cup first round, and once again they came up trumps with a victory and clean sheet.

Jordan Kelly, who had missed the Clondalkin game through injury, announced his return to the side with the opening goal, steering home a powerful backpost header from an inswinging Andy Hickey corner kick.

Town’s second goal also came from a set piece as Roy Kierans floated in a free kick and once again Kelly rose highest, muscling his way in between the Trinity keeper and covering defenders to plant another header to the net.

Sam Reilly almost helped himself to a third goal with a chip over the Trinity netminder, but this time a defender got back to make a clearance off the line.

Horgan singled out Marty Walsh for special mention but heaped praise on his whole squad for what he hailed as the team’s best performance of the season against a more experienced and physical Trinity side.
