Women in business

ALL BUSINESS owners face certain challenges, but women often have additional and unique obstacles to overcome because of their gender. Their male peers are less likely to encounter these issues. Working women who have children experience even more demands on their time, energy, and resources.

But this does not mean women are less successful than men. In fact, statistics show that women are starting businesses at more than twice the rate of male-majority-owned businesses. The growing success rate of women entrepreneurs shows that they are resourceful and able to succeed, despite the odds.

Support of women-owned businesses can take many forms: partnerships, promotion, mentorship, training opportunities, networking events, access to financing and markets, inclusion on boards, and leadership positions.

Fingal has a dynamic network of support for female entrepreneurs, business owners and managers, with many corporations valuing their women in the workforce, and focusing on fostering female talent.

Swords Pavilions has bucked the trend in recent years with Ruth Aston in place as Administration Manager, working closely with Deirdre King, marketing manager.

Swords-based McInerney Saunders has been providing accountancy, taxation and business advice to a range of Irish and international companies for over three decades, and women make-up almost 50% of their workforce.

Leading lights of the company include Director Ruth Brerton and Partner Susan McKittrick.

Ruth has a particular specialty in helping businesses grow and increase their value through her strategic input and advice, while Susan oversees Accounts, payroll and bookkeeping service offerings and enjoys working closely with startups and owner managed businesses interested in growing their operations.

But they are only some examples of women who are in top of their game when it comes to business leaders in Fingal.

Marie Lawlor, Director at Pitman Training, Marketing Manager Lisa O’Shea at the Waterside House, Hotel, the team of Anne Marie Tobin and Sue Brant at Fingal Lettings; all ready to lend their expertise and knowledge.

More women are starting businesses, but they still face challenges operating their businesses. The number of women entrepreneurs is on the rise, particularly in Ireland.
