THEY’VE performed for Pope Francis in the Vatican and graced the stage of the Albert Hall, and now the Drogheda Male Voice Choir will celebrate another milestone in their relatively short existence when they will sing the Sunday morning mass which will be transmitted live from the RTE 1 studios in Donnybrook.

THE mass will take place on February 17th at 11am,and will see an all Drogheda participation, as the main celebrant will be Fr Phil Gaffney, PP St Nary’s and the readers and presenters of the Offertory Gifts will include members of the choir and their families.

“We were delighted to receive this opportunity to sing on national television, and it also gives the choir the chance to perform the beautiful secular repertoire many of them have been singing for 60 years or more, since they were boys,” says Musical Director David Leddy. “With regards to choosing the appropriate pieces to sing, I had no problem with such experienced choristers like Owen Rafferty, Timmy Regan and Mel Healy to assist in the choice of hymns and appropriate interludes. We are really looking forward to adding this latest achievement to our previous successes.”

Tom O’Reilly, this choir’s outgoing chairman, will introduce the celebrant and the choir at the outset. and will also have some nice words of admiration for the town of Drogheda, in whose name the mass will be celebrated.

The service will also feature an opening which will depict prominent areas of interest to Drogheda viewers. The 60 plus strong male voice choir was formed in March 2013, born out of a love of music and recognition of the importance of musical performance to the local community.
