Zebra crossing in Tullyallen needed
SINN Féin Councillor David Saurin has called on Louth County Council to install a Zebra Crossing on the main road through the village of Tullyallen to allow residents safe access to the local shopping area.
Cllr Saurin said the consistence growth in population of the village means safety needs to be reviewd.
“The village of Tullyallen has grown exponentially in terms of population over recent years with many young families living in the various local housing estates. Thankfully the village has a fine local shopping area servicing the needs of the community,” he told the Drogheda Independent.
“As a result of the variety of services provided by these local businesses this shopping area has become increasingly busy with pedestrian and vehicular traffic. To access the shops, pedestrians of all ages, from young children to elderly citizens, have to cross the main road in the village and navigate what at times is a very busy road.”
Cllr Saurin did acknowledge the recent efforts made by the Council to improve road safety in the village. “Speed limits were painted on the road surface, there were anti-prking bollards installed along the footpath at the shop side of the road and safety railings were erected at exits from Gleann Alainn estate.
“Unfortunately too many motorists are continuing to exceed the speed limit as they pass through the village which is why the zebra crossing is needed. I would urge drivers to observe the speed limits and be aware of pedestrians crossing the road at that part of the road.”
Cllr Saurin will be bringing a motion forward to the next Drogheda Borough Council meeting asking that a zebra crossing is installed at this area to further enhance road safety in the village.
