Four different keepers can’t save the Cilles

-

A DEPLETED St Colmcille’s lost their 100% league record to the junior outfit in Carnaross on Sunday.

From early on there were indications that this wasn’t going to be the Cille’s day. Within 10 minutes of the start a Carnaross free came off the woodwork and in the ensuing tussle the referee pointed to the penalty spot while also flashing a black card at Cille’s keeper Andrew Beakey.

Midfielder Conor O’Byrne stood in for the spot kick but was unable to prevent Carnaross from finding the net.

David O’Byrne eventually took over the goalkeeping duties, with

Ciaran Kelly replacing Beakey.

Cille’s were ahead prior to the penalty following points from Eanna Walsh and David O’Byrne. Carnaross, though, built on that penalty goal and went seven points clear at one stage.

Points late in the half from Ruairi Hanlon, Jack Reynolds and Walsh left it at more manageable proportion at the break, with Carnaross ahead 1-7 to 0-6.

Jack Reynolds was unable to start the second half due to injury, but with wind advantage the Cille’s restarted in promising fashion with points from Ciaran Kelly and Conor O’Byrne.

Substitute Ross Molloy became Cille’s fourth player to stand between the posts, allowing O’Byrne revert back to attack.

A Carnaross point halted the revival and the hosts’ advantage eventually stretched out to four points.

Cille’s went in search of a goal late on but were unable to convert a couple of good opportunities.

A Conor O’Byrne point was all they managed in the closing stages as Carnaross held out for victory by a goal.
