Athletes show great promise

-

in THERE was plenty to celebrate amongst the group of unaffiliated athletes as they showed their prowess across a number of events at the Leinster Indoor Championships in Athlone over the weekend.

Recognisable only by their white t-shirts, first up on day one were the Boys Under-17 race where Callum Sheedy finished in sixth place and teammate Cillian McLoughlin came 10th.

Cliodhna Nolan was next to compete in the Under-18 Girls and she finished fourth with a time of 5:10.

It was a similar story of great promise on day two, led by Alex Robertston who ran very well in his Under-12 Boys 600m heat, while Lorcan Forde Dunne won his heat and eventually finished sixth overall with a fantastic time and personal best of 1min 48sec.

In the Girls Under-13 race Eimear Cooney came a fantastic third in her heat and took seventh place overall thanks to a personal best of 1:52, while Isabella García ran very well in that event also.

Emmet McEvoy, who was the only unaffiliated athlete in the Boys Under-13 800m, showed great strength to compete well, while no different were the Girls Under-14 contingent as Ella McLoughlin and Allie Garcia both ran well.

Cliodhna Nolan finished off day two for this group of athletes by finishing fifth in the Under-18 Girls 800m. what was a very tough heat of the Under-13 Boys 600m and was very unlucky not to get through to the final.

The last St Peter’s athlete in action was Ryan Murtagh who was making his shot putt debut. Judging by his performance it won’t be his last as he finished an excellent fifth.

Meanwhile, last week club stalwart Kathleen McConnell finally got her hands on her special award which was originally announced at the Leinster Star Awards back in January.

Unfortunately Kathleen wasn’t able to attend the function, at the Louth County Board meeting on Monday night last week she received the award from County chairman Micheàl Mulligan.

The award was in recognition of her many years of service to athletics in her capacity as both a coach and official at competitions.
