Cushinstow­n crew come of age in Leinster

CUSHINSTOW­N AC had no fewer than 19 athletes competing on both days of the weekend’s Leinster Indoor Juvenile Championsh­ips and they came away with a worthy selection of medals and personal bests.

James Bellew performed brilliantl­y in the Under-14 boys high jump to win the gold medal and Lee Callaghan was placed fourth in the high jump and fourth in the shot where he put in some great throws.

It was silver in the same age group for girls for high jumper Aoife Rohan who also qualified for the 60m hurdles final where she came seventh overall.

The Under-15 girls were in winning form, with Laura Bolster claiming the gold medal in both the long jump and 60m sprints and Ella Barry winning the 60m hurdles and competing very well in the long jump.

Loclainn Harris ran very well in the very competitiv­e Under-15 60m sprint, coming fifth overall, as well as impressing in the long jump competitio­n. He also did very well to qualify for the 60m hurdles final and went on to claim the silver medal.

The Under-16 girls were also in winning form, with Amy Callaghan taking gold in the shot putt and silver in the high jump as well as performing impressive­ly in the long jump.

Niamh Quinn ran brilliantl­y to win the silver medal in the 60m hurdles and came fourth in the shot putt, while Mollie White did very well in the long jump to claim the bronze medal.

Mollie and Abi Sheehy both ran well in the very competitiv­e 200m and were unfortunat­e not to qualify for the finals, but Abi was fifth overall in the long jump and Amy Bellew came fifth overall in the shot.

In the Under-13 age group Nicole Hoey ran very well in the Girls 600m and Nia Hetherton was fourth overall in the high jump, threw well in the shot putt and produced a fine performanc­e in the 60m sprints.

Doireann Power also ran very well in both the 60m sprints and 60m hurdles and performed well in the long jump.

Five of Cushinstow­n’s younger athletes were competing for the first time at these Leinster Indoor Championsh­ips, putting in some great performanc­es and gaining valuable competitio­n experience. Roisin Quinn and Jane Mc Dermott both threw very well in the Under-12 Girls shot putt, with Roisin coming fourth overall, while Jane finished a creditable sixth overall in the Under-12 high jump.

In the Under-12 Boys events Peter Bellew competed in the high jump, Evan Hoey in the long jump and 600m and Kenny Killeen in the long jump.
