Drogheda Independent

Irish title for Greenhills

-

GREENHILLS Bowls Club were well represented in the recent National Junior Doubles Final and the winners’ trophy duly came back to Drogheda.

Lordship in the Cooley Peninsula played host to the decider which saw Sophie Thornberry and Saoirse Allen face Noel Mc Donnell and Ciara Floyd over 10 ends.

There was very little difference between the two teams over the course of the match, which ebbed and flowed throughout. Ciara and Noel got their nose in front in the fourth end to go four up, but in the fifth Ciara and Noel failed to add to their tally, letting in Sophie and Saoirse to cut the deficit down to one.

Ciara and Noel regained their composure and reacted well in the next end, exerting heavy pressure on their opponents to double their advantage to two shots, but back came Sophie and Saoirse once more and the gap was down to the minimum again with three ends remaining.

Sophie and Saoirse continued to pile on the pressure and over the next two ends they turned the tables to lead by two shots.

However, in the final end Ciara and Noel showed great character and determination and played superb draw shots to the head, ultimately coming up trumps by three shots to take the National title back to Greenhills.

Members are reminded that the Singles Charity Tournament will take place shortly and players are asked to put their names forward.

On the Oriel Zone League scene Magheracloone BC were the visitors to Greenhills last Sunday week and the home club won the full 10 points to go 12 ahead at the top of Division 2 with three games to play.

Times of play: Tuesday - Juniors 7 to 8.15pm, Seniors 8.15 to 10.30pm; Thursday - Seniors 8 to 10.30pm.
