Council wanted O’Donovan’s supermarket for new library

-

MEATH County Council has expressed enormous disappointment that a plan to buy the former O’Donovan’s supermarket in the heart of Bettystown has collapsed.

The council were looking to fit out a state of the art library centre in the building and had already received the support of nearby residents.

But last Thursday morning, Director of Services Fiona Lawless received a letter from the chargeholder of the premises to say it was no longer for sale.

The council were in negotiations for the property for a number of months.

It had undergone an assessment from the fire service and they had worked on all the aspects of turning it into a central base for the town.

‘We did a phenomenal amount of work on’this’, she told last week’s area council meeting. ‘We wanted this as a library for the region.’

They are unsure what the owners of the property are going to do with it now.

‘ The residents were delighted with our plans. It is very disappointing’, Ms Lawless stated.

Cllr Sharon Tolan also expressed her shock at the news and felt it would be a perfect fit for what is an empty building in the heart of Bettystown.
