Liam Leech recalled

- BY HUBERT MURPHY

MEMBERS of Louth County Council have expressed their condolences to the family of Liam Leech, regarded as one of Louth’s best ever footballers.

Addressing the Drogheda Borough meeting, Cllr Frank Godfrey said he was truly one of the county’s legends.

‘He was very modest but he was a very talented footballer and was an incredible talent. The Blues of the 1960s were like Kerry. He could make the ball talk and he will be remembered for years,’ he said.

Cllr Pio Smith recalled Liam’s great talent, even into his later years. He was playing in the early 80s in a junior match in Clogherhead and a future star asked why was the evergreen ace still lining out and was promptly told because he was still good enough to line out!

Cllr Richie Culhane felt Liam could have still played senior football into his 40s. ‘I remember training during the summer and you’d never get out because his team would always have to win,’ he stated.

Cllr Oliver Tully remembered Liam as being the friendly breadman around the area for many years. ‘He was also a great golfer,’ he added.
