HISTORY SOCIETY FILM

Slane History Society and Michael Kelly are showing the film ‘The Last September’ in the Boyne Valley Inn, Slane, this Thursday, February 21st at 8.30pm. This film was made in the 1980s, in Dowth House and in Tankardsto­wn and stars Maggie Smith, Keeley Hawes, Michael Gambon, Fiona Shaw and David Tennant and is an opportunit­y to see the locality on film. There will be an admission fee of €5 and all are welcome.

Another event is taking place the following evening Friday, February 22nd at 8pm in Inniskeen, County Monaghan. Slane History Society has received an invitation from Brian Dooley to an evening in their local hall rememberin­g a Patrick Fleming from Slane who was captured there in the 17th century. SLANE CASTLE 5K

It’s time to get back into training for the 5th Slane Castle 5km trail run/walk which takes place on Sunday, May 12, in the majestic grounds of Slane Castle. This event is a great morning out for the whole family. The 5k route takes you around the castle grounds, along the river and through the forest with the castle as a backdrop. There will be t-shirts for under 16’s and for the first 200 adults on the day.

The refreshmen­ts and home baked goods at the finish line are worth the trip alone! This year the organisers hope to have a surprise in store, so keep an eye out for updates over the coming weeks. Online registrati­on will open early March.

TECHNOLOGY CLASSES

A free 5-week basic laptop, iPhone, iPad, smartphone and tablet class will commence shortly in Slane Youth Cafe. Anyone interested in the class can contact Angela, Meath Partnershi­p on 046 9280790.

LITTER PICK

Rossin Rovers and Monknewtow­n Community Council are doing a litter pick this Saturday, February 22nd. Volunteers can meet at hall at 10.30am and play their part in keeping the community clean and green.

NEWGRANGE ONLINE BOOKING SUSPENDED

Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre will undergo major refurbishm­ent in the coming months and for the duration of the works the online pre-booking service will not be available. All tickets will be issued on a daily first come first served basis.

HOTHOUSE FLOWERS

The Conyngham Arms Hotel will host the brilliant Hothouse Flowers in concert on Easter Sunday night, April 21st. The world renowned rock group that combines traditiona­l Irish music with influences from soul, gospel and rock performed recently at the Temple Bar Tradfest and have a number of other concerts coming up shortly including the Dubai Opera House on St Patrick’s Day. If you would like to see Liam Ó Maonlaí, Fiachna Ó Braonái, Maria Doyle Kennedy and the rest of the band tickets are now available from reception at the Conyngham Arms at 041 9884444.

QUIZ NIGHT

Stackallen Lawn Tennis and Pitch & Putt Club have a quiz night this Friday, February 22nd, in the clubhouse at 8.30pm. Table of four €40. Raffle on the night with prizes galore. Proceeds go towards improving club’s disability resources.

ATHLETIC CLUB AGM

Rathkenny AC have their agm in the Sallygarde­ns this Friday, February 22nd, at 7.45pm. All members are requested to be in attendance to discuss the further developmen­t of the club. New coaches are needed in the club - full training will be provided.

DIABETES EDUCATION COURSE

A diabetes education course ‘Desmond’ for all patients with Type 2Diabetes will be starting in Navan in March. This is a free course that runs for two and a half days (three hours each session). Those

YOGA WORKSHOPS

The Ananda Centre Slane have a number of workshops over the next two months. Restorativ­e Yoga takes place on Friday 1st and Friday 15th March at 7.30pm. Yoga for Perimenopa­use is on Friday, March 8th at 7.30pm. Restorativ­e Yoga classes will also be held on Friday 5th (7.30pm) and Saturday 6th (10am) of April. DATES FOR THE DIARY

The Confirmati­on this year in Slane will take place on Wednesday May 8th. First Communion is on Saturday, May 18th. Blessing of the graves in Monknewsto­wn, Dowth and Fennor is on Sunday, May 26th, and on Hill of Slane and St Erc’s Cemetery on Sunday, June 2nd.

RATHKENNY REVELS

Preparatio­n for Rathkenny Revels 2019 are well advanced under musical director Tina Price Lynch and choreograp­her Adam Lynch. The 2019 shows are on April 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th at 8pm with a 3pm matinee on Sunday, April 14th in Rathkenny Hall. Booking details will follow shortly.

PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND

The Meath Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Holy Land takes place from Monday 4th to Tuesday 12th, November. It will be led by Bishop of Meath Tom Deenihan. The cost is €1,525 per person, single room supplement €464.

SHOCK AND SADNESS AT SEAN’S PASSING

There was palpable shock and sadness in the area last week when the the news broke of the sudden passing of Sean Loughran RIP, Glasallen. A farmer all his life, Sean was a familiar figure in the area as he went about his daily farming duties. A quiet and unassuming person, who enjoyed a chat, Sean will be sadly missed by all who knew him, especially neighbouri­ng farmers and residents with whom he had contact on a daily basis. The sincere sympathy of Broomfield and District Residents Associatio­n and the Community of Broomfield and District is extended to Sean,s partner Patricia, mother Moyra, brother Liam, sisters Margaret, Imelda, Bernadette and Pauline, and to all who are bereaved by his passing.
