Floody and Kilroy are boxing for Ireland
NEXT Friday sees history being made in National Stadium Dublin when two Drogheda boys from the one club represent Ireland. Holy Family’s John Kilroy and Antonio Floody have being selected to represent Ireland against Scotland in a full International in the National Stadium.
In this week’s National Schoolboys Championship Holy Family are represented by Andrew Milne, Niall Bannon and Darren Everitt all in with a good chance of medals for the International Ireland v Scotland. The Holy Family Club are running a bus. Names must be given to any club member before Saturday next. Fare - £2.10.
Drogheda Amateur Boxing Club gained a worthy Leinster Juvenile champion in the shape of Glenn Collins at the finals in
Portarlington. Collins (27 kg) took a clear unanimous win over D. Ward (Edenderry) and in his championship bout was given a real challenge by S. Donoghue (Kilbeggan) in which Glenn captured a 4/1 majority decision.
Unfortunately the three others entered didn’t manage to go all the way but were beaten by good boxers who are all now Leinster champions.
Fergal Fagan (39 kg) did actually look set to win with a very strong performance in round one against D. Mooney (Tullamore). Fagan was surprisingly dropped in round two and the ref then stopped the contest.
Robert McCann (33 kg) took a convincing unanimous points decision over G. Reilly (Southmeath) in his first bout, but went on to shockingly lose a 3/2 majority verdict to S. Dormer (Paulstown).
Reg Dyas (48 kg) fought well with strong hitting but went down on all the judges cards to J. Shortall (CBS, Wexford).
