Still no clarity on closed

NEWS on what financial compensation might be available for League of Ireland clubs, including Drogheda United, may be delayed after a key Uefa meeting scheduled for last week was postponed until mid-June.

Clubs are concerned about losing their all-important income from gate receipts if matches have to resume behind closed doors, which appears to be the most likely scenario, and despite talk for a number of weeks about a compensation package nothing concrete has been forthcoming.

However, Drogheda United chairman Conor Hoey (pictured right) feels that the FAI is doing everything it can to bring about a resolution which will satisfy clubs and allow them to agree a resumption of League of Ireland fixtures, probably in August.

Hoey told the Drogheda Independent: ‘We are waiting for news from the FAI about what offer will be put on the table to see if the numbers work, but they are still working hard on it and there are optimistic noises coming from them.

‘The expectation is that a return will be behind closed doors, and in the meantime we will flesh out as a club what we will do if and when that happens and how we will operate in a post-Covid environment.
