Pat and Audrey say thanks for the support

- By MARCUS CAVAROLI

FORMER Drogheda United star Pat Mohan says he has been stunned by the support he and his wife received from the public after both of them were diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Audrey had to be hospitalised at one stage, but thankfully the Glenmore Drive couple have now fully recovered and they would like to acknowledge the medical staff and everyone else who has helped them through their ordeal.

Pat, who played for the Drogs in the 1980s and lined out against mighty Spurs in the Uefa Cup, said: ‘Everyone’s been fantastic and we owe thanks to all the clubs around the North East. We’ve had different managers, players and referees texting me, asking could they do anything, and we’ve been overwhelmed.

‘It shows you that people all rally round in situations like this and it’s great when you have neighbours, family and friends like that.’

How the virus got into the Mohans’ home remains a mystery, but they’re just grateful to have come through their ordeal relatively unscathed.

‘We don’t know how we contracted it - that’s what we can’t understand,’ Pat added. ‘We were very careful when we went into lockdown in March, but it was probably me that brought it into the house because I would be going into town for bits and pieces.

‘It wasn’t nice. It’s not like the flu. It attacks your lungs and you could be coughing for half an hour. It wears you down and you’d be having hallucinations.

‘Audrey was hospitalised in the new department in the Lourdes for a few days and got tested. I had to be tested as well, but they knew I had it anyway.

‘ They let her home then and we had to self-isolate in different rooms and stick with the guidelines. You’d be amazed at what you can and can’t do. Take paracetamol for the fever and liquids, but no ice. We had to sleep with the window open and the bedclothes had to be cleaned regularly.

‘You have to wash and dry your clothes on a high heat to kill the virus.

‘Audrey was fairly bad, but the HSE were ringing every day to see how we were and we did what we were told.

‘We’re fine now, but Audrey’s still very nervous about going out.’
