Volunteers sought to help with Little Terns

-

THE Little Terns are now nesting in Baltray and the Little Tern project are looking for volunteers to help out.

Eggs have already been found and the organisers are now looking for people to keep an eye on them during the day.

If you can help out by volunteering a few hours of your time it would be greatly appreciated and you can offer your services by messaging the Louth Nature Trust Facebook Page or by contacting them by phone on 0862434874.

The volunteers, will, of course, need to adhere to the relevant social distancing rules.

A number of nests and eggs have been found and the group believe that the fact that there is plenty of feeding in the area is a big plus and should keep them in Baltray although it is still early days.

The group have built up a very strong support over the years with locals already aware of the nesting season and those who access the beach doing so on the left during this time, which runs from April to August, because the Terns nest on the right.

The little terns breed in colonies on Baltray beach each year. The bird lays two to four eggs on the ground which leaves the nest and eggs vulnerable to predators including foxes.

The Little Tern Project involves a group of volunteers who do everything they can to protect the eggs during the nesting season.

Earlier this month, the group were horrified when a caravan used as a base for volunteers was vandalised.

However, there has been good news for the project after a generous supporter offered the group her own mobile home free of charge.
