Mary’s going for the chop!

-

WITH the annual Women’s Mini Marathon falling foul of the pandemic this year, funding will be seriously down, and with this in mind, local lady Mary Nelis is doing her bit for charity!

This Wednesday. June 3rd, will see the cancer survivor shave off her fine head of hair to raise at least €1,000 for the Gary Kelly Centre, who she says were amazing when she needed them seven years ago. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and thankfully in 2017 I got the all clear,” says Mary, who is a member of Voices of the Boyne community choir. “In 2015 I walked through the doors of the Gary Kelly Centre, after much persuasion off my family, and now it’s now my second home.”

She says the welcome and service this centre provides is second to none and we’re very lucky to have it in our town.

“The staff, councillors and patients are now some of my closest friends, and all services are available through a walk-in service.

“The centre receives no government funding, and relies purely on fundraising and this is why I’ve decided on Wednesday the 3rd of June (due to no hairdressers being opened) I’m going to shave my head in honour of all the cancer patients I’ve met through the years who have sadly lost their lives”.

Mary has run in the mini marathon for the past few years, raising thousands for the centre, and is missing out this year because of lockdown.

“So Masd Mary is at it again,” she says with a laugh.

“This weekend would have been the lady’s mini marathon and I know a lot of my family and friends would have sponsored me for this, so I’m hoping you can sponsor me in helping raise much needed funds for the Gary Kelly centre.”

Mary’s GoFundMe page is ‘Mary’s Headshave for Gary Kelly” and we’ll have the photographic evidence in next week’s edition!
