COUNCIL WANTED AN INCINERATOR IN 1970!
THEN CORPORATION KNEW THERE WAS A BIG PROBLEM LOOMING WITH WASTE
50 years ago, Drogheda Corporation were looking at the cost involved in bringing an incinerator to the area to solve the great dump problem, then hanging over officials for three years.
At the May 1970 meeting of the Corporation, it was decided to look into the costs involved in purchasing and operating an incinerator
Our report stated, ‘ Two years ago, the dump at the Marsh Road was closed and a site obtained on the North Road, following complaints from residents in Greenhills and on the Marsh Road. But now councillors feel that this was a mistake.
‘Said Deputy P. S. Donegan : “I think it is quite clear now that moving the dump to the North Road site was a failure When the wind blows there, smuts and dirt are carried all over the area. It is going a bit thick when a person who has paid for a house finds that he has to deal with this.”
“We certainly have a problem in our dump,” said Mr. D. Fairtlough, “and this problem is going to get worse. There is a need for a system of disposing of combustible refuse and putting in a dump where it will not go on fire. The only logical means of doing this is an incinerator and I feel that we must look into this and get some idea of the cost, feasibility and savings under such a system.”
‘Mr. P. Buckley, Mayor : “I think we should go ahead with this proposal to provide an incinerator or at least to change the site of the dump. It is so close to a residential area that it should not be there at all.”
‘A suggestion by Deputy Donegan that the Corporation should consider moving the dump back to the Marsh Road was not taken.
