PARISH NEWS

Fr. Dooley & Fr. Caraher will celebrate Mass (without a congregation) for the intentions of parishioners. Mass will be offered each day for any intentions booked.

These are challenging times: each of us is struggling with our own individual circumstances: frontline work; reduced income; unemployment; anxiety; isolation; lack of routine; domestic tensions, and many other issues. Some parishioners are trying to facilitate other avenues of income for upkeep of the Parish; as we have no envelope income since Mass is being celebrated without a congregation.

Parishioners, who wish to and are able to, might use one of the following: Standing order forms are available either in the porch of the church or we can post one to you if you message our Facebook page Mellifont Parish-Tullyallen.

The Parish have linked up with idonate to facilitate on-line donations. By clicking the link on our Facebook Page you will be brought to the Parish of Mellifont page where you will be given the opportunity to make a one-off OR regular donation to the Parish. The link is: https://www.idonate. ie/mellifontparish. Still others might wish to store up their envelopes for when ‘normal service’ resumes.

Your support is gratefully appreciated these days.

The Church remains open daily at the moment from 9am – 5 pm for quiet reflection and solitary prayer as we continue this Easter season. There are some small clean bottles of Holy Easter Water which have been carefully prepared in the church porch in a basket. We invite you to take a bottle for your household or for someone who is staying safe. Weekly bulletin is placed in church porch too.

CEMETERY SUNDAY

Due to the present Covid19 pandemic restrictions it will not be possible for the usual blessing of the graves ceremony at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption this Corpus Christi. Fr. Sean and Fr. Larry will however bless all the graves in the week between the 7th and 14th June with no families present. It is hoped that it will be possible to video this blessing using a drone and later share it on the Parish Facebook page. Any families who wish to ‘dress their family graves’ are asked to do so before 7th June.

THE LINK WALKWAY CONCERNS

The committee of the Link Walkway have highlighted their concerns about Bicycle users taking to our local walkway in recent weeks.

They have said that “The walkway is providing solace for many in these difficult times for all and it is wonderful to see so many families using this facility. Unfortunately, over the past number of weeks the Committee have witnessed first hand and have been notified of an increased number of bikers using the route. The walkway was established after many years of work by the people of Tullyallen in conjunction with Coillte to provide safe access to Belnumber Woods.

The trail is not designed to accommodate bikes as well as pedestrians and because of the number of people using the route it is a real possibility that a collision may occur involving children and cyclists. Therefore we would ask that the people using the route for biking to please stop. Furthermore, we are saddened to see that a number of the bridges have been vandalised by the removal of planks of wood in what we believe is to allow easier access for bikes.

This has been reported to Coillte and the Gardaí.

Please ask the people doing this to respect the natural beauty of the woods and not to spoil this wonderful amenity that has given joy to so many. Please stay safe, keep the area clean and continue to enjoy”.

Whilst they have had to change how they do things, they now also offer phone and video consultations, which are partially/ fully reimbursed by some private health insurers, and as always, if they need to arrange an in-practice consultation, they can do that too. Stay safe everyone & know your health matters

BE KIND

A wise facebook post was doing the rounds last week and it read “Businesses are now starting to open in the first phase as per the governments plan. If you go into a commercial premises and see some mistakes, don’t start recording or taking photos to later upload onto social media. Please speak to the owner. We all have to help each other. This is new for everyone and business owners will be trying their best to make it safe and get their business running again. Let’s help each other throughout this transition”. We could all learn a thing or two from that paragraph.

TULLYALLEN PHARMACY

The pharmacy has been restocked with hand Sanatisers, Gloves, Face Masks, Soap, Wipes, Milton and Thermometers. Simply message them on facebook or Telephone on 041 983 7760 or email on tullyallenpharmacy@gmail.com.

SCHOOL BUS SUPPORT

Local man Barry usher is appealing for all parents to help him and the many independent Bus Operators in our country by highlighting the importance of the Local Bus Operators to the people in Government. He, along with other independent Bus operators are asking the all the parents take a few moments to send an email to paschal.donoghue@oir.ie and Heather.humphries@oir.ie and Ministersoffice@dttas.gov.ie.

The Subject box should have Assistance for PRIVATE School Transport Operators and if you could word the email as follows: As a parent who uses our Local Private School Bus Operator, I wish to ask that assistance be put in place to help transport operators. As a parent, I require the services of my local school bus operator to get my children to school.

The fact that this essential service may cease due to lack of government assistance, would have a huge impact on our family life. Thank You”. It is just a short email but all parents if could do this, it just might highlight the plight of our school going children.

CENTRA DELIVERIES

Niall and the staff at Centra in the village know that some of the elderly in our community are staying at home as advised and that it might also be a little scary for some customers to go out and get their shopping. If you do not feel comfortable going into the shop, Centra in the village will deliver to your home with no delivery charge (no matter what the cost of your shopping is) Centra would not want to see anybody stuck and says that if you call 041 9830496 with your list they will organize to get your delivery to you. You can pay over the phone if you do not wish to have any contact with the delivery and your shopping can be dropped safely to your door.

THE EMMETS OFFER HELP IN THE COMMUNITY

There have been lots of people on social media offering to help the elderly or vulnerable or others in need of assistance in our parish by collecting groceries, fuel for the fire or prescriptions and the Glen Emmets in the heart of our village is no different. If you need or know of anyone who needs a little help and is isolated, please contact Joey on 087-8339568 or Cariona on 086-3203675 or Jack on 087- 2316722

LITTLE BIT OF GLEN EMMETS HISTORY

Louth GAA are doing a series of posts online. See below what their post was, it could be very interesting, especially for those who are not linked up online. “Up today we have the Tullyallen based club Glen Emmets. Founded in 1886, a group of Tullyallen men played the very first match under rules in Louth against the Dundalk Young Irelanders. In 1940 they became known as the Sarsfields. They had the reputation of a formidable side, but never won any major trophy. They wore black and white stripes. In 1956 the Sarsfields disbanded and the players either retired or went to other clubs, notably Monasterboice and Collon. In 1958, Larry McGrane founded a second division club called Glen Emmets. In 2002 work began on altering their pitches and in 2005 they began work on the their new clubhouse.

Today they have a great facilities and a very active committee, which is producing great results at underage level and will no doubt bear fruit at adult level in years to come. They have been Junior Championship winners in 1965, 1983, 1997, 2012, 2017 and League Division 3 Winners 2004, 2016. They currently play in Division 3A and the Intermediate Championship.

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES

During these challenging times it is important that we have a look around at all the locals in our area and seeing if we can support them in their businesses.

It might help to write a positive review online and tell your family and friends about their services. Why not follow them on social media and engage in their posts or sign up for their newsletters. Let’s try and get out there and support our local businesses.
