McKenna wins virtual 5k in memory of Michelle

- Star of the Sea athletes, like many others, have missed the social interaction since Covid-19 took hold.

STAR of the Sea AC’s annual race in memory of popular club member Michelle McKiernan turned into a ‘virtual 5k’ because of the coronavirus pandemic but still raised €7,705 for Balbriggan Cancer Support Group over a 10-day period.

In all, 512 people registered to take part and the fantastic total was confirmed last week by club treasurer Linda Richardson and chair Declan Coughlan, who thanked everybody who donated and took part.

They acknowledged all the support from clubs, especially Dunboyne and Lusk who donated their prize fund, and local businesses and individuals who helped raise the money for such a good cause.

They gave special thanks to Ronan from My run results for his outstanding service, and to Andrew Coscoran and locally based RTE Sport broadcaster Darragh Maloney for the great promotion of the event.

And of course the Julianstown-based Star of the Sea club and committee for working so hard to make this the most successful event it has ever run, and to the members who offered up their group entry as a donation.

Finally, Star of the Sea would like to thank Gerry and his family for allowing them to run the race in honour of Michelle who they say was a beautiful kind soul and will forever remain in the heart of the club.

Victory in the race went to Star of the Sea’s own Ciaran McKenna in a brilliant time of 15:12, a full minute ahead of the runner-up Dylan McLaughlin of Kilkenny City Harriers.

Three Drogheda & District athletes finished in the top 10, with Colin Leonard fourth in 16:49, Colm Reilly fifth just one second further back and Patrick O’Grady - winner of the M55 category - eighth overall in 17:01.

Fiona Kenna was the leading Star of the Sea lady, second in her category in a time of 18:37.
