Tooting Meadow in frame for top design award
McKevitt King Architects have been shortlisted for this year’s RIAI awards for their creative design solution at Tooting Meadow on Scarlet Street, Droghdea.
The RIAI awards take place every year and aim to acknowledge excellence in architectural design. The project is listed in the public choice category, the results of which are determined completely by the public who are invited to vote online at www.riai.ie.
Speaking on RTE 1 radio last week, RIAI president Ciaran O’Connor mentioned McKevitt King Architects’ project specifically, stating that in terms of housing, Tooting Meadow is a very good scheme, that is a very socially responsive project, on a brown field site and an excellent example of urban renewal.
The project is up against some very prestigious projects and architectural practices and McKevitt King say making the shortlist is a great honour. ‘ We would like to encourage everyone in Drogheda to vote for this project and to share the social media links online which will promote the project further and give it the best chance possible. Voting closes on Friday July 3rd so please cast your vote early,’ a spokesperson stated.
Tooting Meadow is a social housing project for the North and East Housing Association.
The design aspiration for the project was to create a high-quality housing project with an emphasis on community. From the start it was important that the new building would contribute to the urban experience and improve the streetscape on Scarlet Street for everyone’s benefit. The design concept was to open the site to provide a visual connection between the street and the mature trees and pocket park on the grounds of Siena
The new homes at Tooting Meadow were occupied by new residents at the start of the year and the North and East Housing Association will have an official opening in September.
