Heartbreak as family grave is vandalised

CCTV NEEDED IN ST PETER’S CEMETERY

- by ALISON COMYN

MINDLESS thugs have vandalised the grave of a deceased couple in St Peter’s cemetery in Drogheda, in an apparent random attack.

Lisa Cummins has said the family has been left devastated after the grave of her mam and dad Ann and Frank Gibney was targetted sometime last week, along with two or three others, with flowers and stones strewn around the place and an attempt made to smash the headstone.

“We are all heartbroken, and just can’t believe that anyone would want to do such a thing,” says Lisa, who is very upset by the incident. “It was clear they tried to smash the scroll we have with our names on it, and maybe they found it too heavy and just tossed it to one side. They also pushed all the stones off the top of the grave, and squeezed the flowers until they were dead, so they didn’t even want to steal them for another grave.”

Lisa had received a message from a family friend last Wednesday to say their parents’ grave had been affected, but didn’t know how badly until she got there.

“Daddy’s only been gone a year, and Mammy is dead almost 14 years, and we had only been there last week for Father’s Day and it was grand so it was sometime between Sunday and Wednesday,” she says. “It was never touched before and I’m heartbroken to think someone would think so little of another to do that, and just glad the Blessings of the Graves isn’t this weekend as we would never have it ready. ”

Lisa says it is about time there was CCTV at the cemetery, as she knows it’s not the first time it’s happened to graves.

“Their grave it down besides the Angel’s Plot, and there should be CCTV at either end of the graveyard, and these people might think twice about doing it,” she adds. “I have contacted all the local TDs and hope that they might put pressure on whoever is in charge of the graveyard, as I don’t think there’s much point in calling the gardai, as what can they do now?”
