Traffic tail backs took gloss off first trial

-

WHILST Mayor Callan, local activists and councillors, and many citizens were happy at being able to walk along the centre of West Street at the weekend, many traders, and particularly local motorists, expressed intense displeasure at the first trial.

The section from Stockwell Street to Shop Street was closed to traffic from 11am Saturday 19th to 10pm Sunday 20th, causing considerable tailbacks at the Bridge of Peace, and a bottle neck at Narrow West Street, as motorists tried to filter into the streets and turn down Stockwell Street.

‘I have no doubt that the inclusion of street furniture, parasols, windbreakers, buskers, etc can add a new dimension to the street,’ commented Cllr Declan Power. ‘ The issue of the traffic yesterday was unacceptable but easily resolved with better traffic management and communication from LCC. Traffic on Peter Street on both days flowed with ease’.
