Council to acquire Dominican

-

CHIEF Executive of Louth CC Joan Martin is in talks with the Dominican Order to acquire the Church and the priory building beside it for use as public buildings.

She told councillors on Monday that she intended to purchase the buildings from the capital account. They will be used by the council.

‘ Having raised this matter some months ago with the Chief Executive, I am very happy to see progress has been made. This will be a fantastic save in terms of protecting one of our treasured building and with the sad loss of the Dominican Order from Drogheda we will take on the care and upkeep of this beautiful and historic building like the Franciscan Church,’ Mayor Kevin Callan stated.

The Mayor was contacted a number of months ago by parishioners who asked if something similar to what was arranged with the a Franciscan order could be looked at.

‘ I was keen to see this building kept for the people of Drogheda as it holds such an important part in our history. I thank the chief executive for her efforts and to the Dominican Order for working with the Council to make that happen,’ he stated.
