ANGELA.

When Angela Lynn passed away a few weeks back, the Lynn family lost a beautiful wife, a wonderful mother and a doting grandmother. Simultaneously, the parish of Monasterboice lost a friendly, resourceful and multifaceted woman who contributed so much to the parish as a whole, and Naomh Mairtin in particular.

Indeed it was fitting that her, and her absolutely devoted husband, Tony, spent most of their 56 years of married life being involved in all things GAA, as that self same discipline was responsible for their meeting in the first place.

Angela hailed from Dunshaughlin, so it was no surprise that a Meath girl would be interested in Gaelic Football, but it took a conglomeration of events that brought her to a Louth club match. Not least of which was the fact that she had taken up employment, locally, with the Mathews family in Dunleer.

Now, I know that you’d all love me to proclaim to you, how a one Anthony Lynn was the main protagonist in the match in question and it was a game of great importance. How, despite it being a beautiful summers day, Tony soared so high to catch many a ball that there was snow on them. And, how, his tally of 20 points ensured victory for his team. Sorry, to say it was an non discript game, which Tony, obstensively lost. I say, obstensively, because Tony only appeared to loose that day. Unbeknownst to him, whilst the score board wasn’t in his favour, he had won the heart of a pretty girl on the grassy bank. Apparently Angela Ryan was besotted particularly with Tony’s legs (this was 1960 and Specsavers hadn’t yet caught hold in Ireland) Naturally, when alerted, to Angela’s interest, Tony (whose eyes WERE PERFECT)was equally smitten and the rest, as they say, is history. And, the history is manifold.

They married four years later in 1964 had four children, Sinead, Joe, David and Ollie and each one a monument to their loving upbringing. All contributed, in no small way, to the local Naomh Mairtin club and the parish of Monasterboice.

Along with her beloved football, Angela enjoyed her bingo in The Valley Inn, helping out at Naomh Mairtin’s weekly Lotto draw and horse racing. Indeed, her and Tony attended The Irish Grand National in Fairyhouse, where they always met up with Angela’s family from Meath.

Along with so much joy in their lives, Angela and Tony were also dealt with one particular hard blow. I speak of, of course, the oh so awful passing of their beautiful daughter, Sinead. This was excruciating for this lovely, lovely couple and was something that, covertly, hurt them badly. However,

overtly, they got on with life, despite Angela not being blessed with great health, in latter years. Tony, Joe, David and Ollie, daughters in law Melanie, Sandra and Ann Marie your son in law, Mark, grandchildren Cara, Nathan, Aoibhe, Cian, Josh, Zach and Ada Rose, brothers, Mattie and Johnny, sisters Maureen and Katy and sisters in laws Ann and Annie, the people of Monasterboice, which showed such outpouring of condolences around the time of Angela’s funeral, now want you all to know that you are still in their prayers.

Angela, thanks for all that you have done for the parish as a whole. Meath may have stolen a Cup from us in 2010, which, ultimately lost a lot of it’s value. We got a diamond from The Royal County in 1964 and it was priceless. God’s rest Angela and Sinead.

charity cycle from Dunleer to Mullingar on Saturday last, Sept 5th. All proceeds will go towards purchasing a much needed vehicle in my work place, which is a residential house run by St. John of God’s. Bottom line (any pun is not intended) is that it was an arduous journey done by well intentioned people, with the need for social distancing only compounding the task. So, if you could see yourself parting with a few bob, please ring 0862039501 and you’ll be advised on how to do so. Thanks very much.
