One man and his dog saved in daring rescue

-

MAN proved to be dog’s best friend over the weekend, when an owner was rescued after trying to save his dog’s life.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, when a woman rang the coastguard reporting that her husband and their dog were in difficulty in the river close to the Curley Hole area.

The National Maritime Operation Centre received the 999 call shortly after 3pm, when the man had entered the river to rescue his German Shepherd dog and had become trapped on a small island in the middle of the river.

‘Our Officer in Charge contacted the woman and after speaking to her was able to pinpoint the location to the Salmon Traps area of the River, close to the rapids,’ said a spokesperson for the rescue service.

‘ The unit immediately readied the Drogheda Coast Guard Tender and all necessary equipment and several land units proceeded to the scene’.

Once on scene, the team launched the Drogheda Coast Guard Tender and recovered the man and his dog safely.

‘ They were both very happy to be back on dry land and were handed over to the National Ambulance Service who administered First Aid,’ added the spokesperson.

‘ This was a very successful outcome today following a multi-agency collaboration’.

Other services on scene: Rescue 116, An Garda Síochána Drogheda, An Garda Síochána Slane, The National Ambulance Service, Drogheda Fire and Rescue Service.

Remember if you see someone in trouble in or near the water please dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
