Bettystown duo take top award for Studio Coffee

- By ALISON COMYN

THERE are times - especially at the moment - when a delicious cup of Joe is needed to get us through the madness. And there can be few finer than a local brew which has just received a prestigious award in the UK.

The Studio Coffee Roasters is run by Bettystown couple Alan and Louise Phillips and they recently took home the Great Taste Producer award from the Guild of Fine Food London.

‘We are so thrilled with the award, and in this category, they give such a detailed response to the judging, that you know it is a worthy award, and you can learn even more from their comments,’ says Louise, a former teacher from Trim. In a previous life, her husband and co-owner Alan earned an MBA and was an accountant working in the pharmaceutical industry. His pharmaceutical background intertwined with his passion for coffee pioneered the development of The Studio Coffee Roasters brand.

‘Alan is just passionate about good coffee, and when it came to coffee roasting, he was already committed to the importance of education, experience and training in order to roast at a professional level,’ adds Louise. ‘He joined the SCAA and trained under Kees Kraakman, of Keppler coffee who has over 20 years of experience in speciality coffee and he proceeded to complete the SCAA’s exams’.

And it’s been worth all the hard work. Having won awards in 2018 and 2019, The Studio Coffee Roasters were delighted to

win again this year with their Columbia Rosalba Bados coffee. The Great Taste Producer is awarded to producers who win three times in five years Great Taste is the world’s largest and most trusted food and drinks awards where over 500 experts provide honest, straightforward and impartial

feedback from chefs, buyers, food writers and retailers.

The Studio Coffee is available for sale online and locally in The Pantry at the Lime Kiln in Julianstown, Fine Food stores, selected Supervalu and Avoca stores and at www.studiocoffee.com.
