Removing parking could fix Pearse Park speeding problem

-

A call has been made for speed ramps or road markings in one section of Pearse Park, which has been the scene of a number of traffic incidents in recent times.

Cllr Joanna Byrne raised the issue at the recent council meeting in Drogheda, saying that residents in one stretch between numbers 165 and 188 are seeking some sort of traffic calming to slow speeding drivers.

‘ There’s a growing consensus amongst residents in one particular area – where traffic enters from Hardman’s Gardens

– that there is a need for speed ramps in the area,’ she pointed out, ‘ but in the meantime some road or right of way markings, or even a yield marking , children at play sign or Slow Down sign would help’.

She said there seemed to be an issue with cars taking this left-hand turn ‘nearly on two wheels’ and then having to slam on brakes when they see children playing.

‘ There are two houses in particular on both corners, where cars have gone into the garden and knocked their walls and the fence is still down at the minute,’ she added. ‘ The fear is, if there were children playing there, in or around the gardens, there would be a serious accident.’

Darius Messiah agreed that something needs to be done about the speeding at the corner and it has been looked at a few times. One possibility suggested by the engineer was to look at removing parking which would allow more space for cars to pass. ‘I’m not sure what we can do there,’ he told the members, ‘ but maybe we could put some road markings or Children signs.’
