Groundbreaking migrant integration scheme for counties

- By ALISON COMYN

A strategy where people from all communities are made welcome and helped integrate in Louth and Meath was launched last week.

Last Friday, Minister for Justice Helen McEntee launched the joint Meath and Louth Migrant Integration Strategy in Kells Enterprise and Technology Centre.

The Migrant Integration Strategy 2019-2022 was developed by Meath County Council and Louth County Council’s Community Sections with a vision that migrants and those of migrant origin are facilitated to play a full role in Irish society - in communities, workplaces and politics, that integration is a core principle of Irish life and that Irish society and institutions work together to promote integration.

‘ The strategy is the result of engaging with the people we need to support, and enables us to target our policy areas and offer support where it is needed most,’ said Minister McEntee at the launch. ‘ The strategy now needs everyone to come together, integration doesn’t just happen; it needs everyone to play their part.’

Meath County Council Chief Executive Jackie Maguire added that the two councils are fully committed to ensuring that both counties are places where people from all nationalities feel welcome and at home and where they have the freedom to engage meaningfully in the communities and places where they live, work and play.

‘ The strategy aims to promote inclusive and intercultural places where discrimination is not tolerated but rather is positively challenged and where everyone is valued and respected.’
