Paddy Gerrard marks50 yearsas sacristan inSt Peter’s

-

December 1983

TRIBUTES will be paid on Sunday to a Drogheda man who has given outstanding service to the parishioners of St. Peter’s parish over the past 50 years.

On that day and date, Mr. Paddy Gerrard celebrates his 50th anniversary as sacristan and to honour the occasion Bishop James Lennon will be concekbrating 12 o’clock Mass in St. Peter’s with other priests of the parish.

Representatives of all religious Orders in the town will also be present, as will the Mayor of Drogheda, Coir. Michael Bell and members of Drogheda Corporation.

Mr. Gerrard is only the second sacristan to serve St. Peter’s Church. This is remarkable in view of the fact that this church is 102 years old. Fifty years ago, when he took on the job, he was taking over from another man who had given outstanding service to the town, the late Mr. Edward Lambe.

All members of the public are invited to attend Sunday’s Mass of celebration. When Bishop Lennon addresses the congregation he will speak of the long and dedicated years of service which Mr. Gerrard has given to St. Peter’s and, indeed, to the town of Drogheda.

He will recall the many great occasions. at which Mr. Gerrard has officiated as sacristan and the loyalty he has shown to him and to previous Pastors of St. Peter’s.

Some three years ago Bishop Lennon was also present when Cardinal Tomas O Fiaich travelled down to Drogheda to present to him the prestigious Bene Merenti Medal. This is a decoration awarded by Pope John Paul for services rendered to the church.
