Vital Mell school lights still not working - nine years later!

-

ALMOST a decade after they were installed, a set of pedestrian lights outside a Drogheda school have still not been switched on.

‘We have written to the council about it and spoke with councillors, but still the lights are switched off. We wonder will they ever work,’ school principal Mary Hanafin said.

The busy school, which has hundreds of students, has grown a lot down the years and hopes to progress even further in the years ahead.

‘Getting the lights switched on is a necessity at this stage.

‘Even the street lights along the road at the front of the school don’t work.

‘We have made contact wth the council and they came up to see us in the past and know the problem, but we are still waiting for something to be done,’ the principal said.

With the COVID lockdown set to be eased to allow schools back in the coming weeks, the fears of school management about the lack of proper lighting will again be very real.

The school was opened in 2012 and the crossing lights erected as part of that, but even the orange bags put around them at the time have not been taken off.

‘ This is a problem that has been apparent for many years but who sorts it out is the issue.

‘Our only concern is the safety of

the children coming into and leaving the school.

‘It is amazing and worrying that this has gone on for so many years without

any resolution.

‘We would like to see the situation resolved before the end of this school term ,’ Ms Hanafin said.
