Mighty interest from clubs in DI Coca-Cola Awards funding
THIS year’s 32nd annual Drogheda Independent Coca-Cola Sport Star Awards in the d Hotel sadly will not be able to proceed in its usual glitzy blacktie dinner format for obvious reasons. Instead a much more low-key affair will take place this month in line with Covid-19 restrictions.
However, the event’s main sponsors Coca-Cola are very keen to ensure that the sponsorship funds they so generously donated towards the event are spent in a meaningful way in the local community.
With that in mind, last month the company, supported by the Drogheda Independent and awards associate sponsors the d Hotel - invited local sporting organisations to contact this newspaper with details of specific projects that they need financial help with during these very difficult times.
By the deadline, which was yesterday (Monday), we had been inundated with applications for funding from clubs for a variety of worthwhile projects.
A common theme stated by many of these organisations is that they are struggling to make ends meet and they would welcome any offer of funds, big or small, to help keep the show on the road.
A judging panel made up of representatives from Coca-Cola, the Drogheda Independent and the d Hotel will now discuss the various applications, decide on the most deserving cases and arrange to distribute the available funds accordingly.
The panel faces some difficult decisions as the total sum applied for is approximately six times the amount available from the Coca-Cola fund.
