O’Dowd calls for early call on d Hotel lease renewal

-

Drogheda Aontú candidate, Michael O’Dowd has called on the government to make an early decision not to renew the two-year lease for the d Hotel to be used as a refugee centre.

“The lease allowing The d Hotel to operate as a refugee centre is for two years. While my commitment to humanitarian aid and support for those fleeing war is strong, I also believe in the importance of strategic planning for our town’s economic and cultural future,” the former Mayor of Drogheda said.

Mr O’Dowd said that through his work with My Streets he works closely with tour operators bringing tourists from the USA to Drogheda. “This engagement has not only showcased Drogheda’s unique attractions but has also highlighted the potential for further tourism and cultural exchange. For instance I am currently organising a walking tour for over 40 visitors, who are interested in St Oliver Plunkett. Activities like these underscore our town’s appeal as a destination for education, history, and cultural engagement.

“Next year is the 500th anniversary of the birth of St. Oliver Plunkett, an event of considerable historical importance, and giving us an opportunity to attract global attention and visitors. Preparations for this milestone event are crucial for its success and for the promotion of Drogheda as a premier tourist destination.

“Therefore, I publicly commit to opposing the renewal of this lease — not out of indifference to the plight of refugees but from a responsibility to ensure our town can fully capitalise on the economic benefits. Tour operators, integral to the vitality of our tourism sector, require a 12-month planning window to effectively organise accommodations, tours, and events. An early decision on the d Hotel’s status is essential for these preparations.

“Furthermore, providing refugees with certainty and stability regarding their accommodations is equally important. An early decision will also allow The d Hotel’s owners ample time to transition the facility back to tourist accommodation, ensuring they are prepared to contribute to the anniversary celebrations and the growth of Drogheda’s tourism industry.

“I am committed to engaging with all stakeholders to find balanced solutions that support our refugee community while also fostering the economic and cultural vitality of Drogheda. My aim is to advance a plan that respects our town’s rich history and looks forward to a future of prosperity and inclusiveness.”
