DECLAN BINGHAM
The Mitchels lost a great one recently with the sad passing of Declan Bingham. Their tribute, as ever, was fitting.
“John Mitchels GFC would like to express our deepest sympathy to the Bingham family on the death of Declan, RIP. A dedicated clubman, Declan was an integral part of the Mitchels community for many years. His commitment to the club saw him take on many roles, firstly as a player, later as a coach and selector and, more recently, as a committee member and County Board delegate.
Declan was particularly dedicated to the development of younger players, working with juvenile teams and acting as selector on the Baile Talún minor team that made it to the 1999 championship final. He was selector again two years later when the minor team won the championship. He took on the role of selector at senior level on a number of occasions and was also involved with the Louth U-21’s, working with his great friend, the late Damien Reid. Players that he worked with especially remember him for his ability to encourage, motivate and instill a sense of belief.
Declan was especially proud of the club’s achievements in recent years and took particular pride in seeing his four sons, John, Sam, Stephen and Andrew playing together in the Mitchels colours. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him, played with him, or worked with him in his many roles within the club and beyond.
We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Sinéad, sons John, Sam, Stephen and Andrew, daughter, Aimée, their mother Ann Marie, his grandchildren Lily and Tadhg, and his extended family.”

NATIONAL SPRING CLEAN
The supplies for National Spring Clean have arrived. Taking place over the entire month of April. Please get in touch and get involved. Again this year, the National Spring Clean is also raising awareness about how the adoption of a circular economy model, will reduce our litter, and climate impact.
The circular economy is a waste prevention approach to keep resources in use for as long as possible, enabling us to extract the maximum value from them before recovery and regeneration. This is based on three principles: eliminating waste and pollution, keeping materials and products in use (through re-use and recycling), and protecting nature.
This means that as we transition to a more circular economy, we’ll see less waste, less litter, and lower emissions, and thus, a cleaner planet. These principles of a circular economy have been central to the ethos of National Spring Clean for the past 24 years. Last year some 35% of all waste collected was recycled, thanks to recyclable waste bags provided to groups and individuals who register, while the removal of litter from our natural environment has helped tackle biodiversity loss.
Throughout this year’s campaign, National Spring Clean also hopes people will consider their waste output and moderate consumption behaviours that produce excess waste, and look at alternatives that will move us away from a throwaway culture to a more sustainable circular culture. The Association will be organising Litter Picks in due course, keep an eye out for notifications.
Nitrous Oxide or Laughing Gas canisters are regularly found by people out picking litter around where they live, including in Broomfield and District. The dangers of this substance have been highlighted in this column previously, and elsewhere over the past few years. Handle these canisters with caution, preferably notifying the Environment Section of your Local Authority to have them dealt with. Please do what you can to support National Spring Clean.
GRANGEGEETH INN DART TEAMS SUCCESS AGAIN
For the second time this year, the Grangegeeth Inn Darts Team brought home the silverware. Having won the Boyne Valley and District Darts League Div.2 Cup Final a few weeks ago, they were back again in the League Final last week, and once again did not disappoint. Grangegeeth’s opposition on the night was Foley’s B, who proved to be tough opponents and worthy of their place in the final.
The Grangegeeth Team Members were Paul Weldon, Marius Galligan, Owen O Connor, Ciaran Rattigan, James Bellew, Kyle Tallon, Jack O Connor, David Martin, Robbie Kealy, and Declan Martin. It was quite a Darts Season for the Grangegeeth Team, taking the two top prizes in Division 2. They put it down to discipline, restraint and no small measure of practice. The League Final was hosted by The Morning Star, Tullyallen, where the large attendance present were full-some in their praise for Pat, Stuart and Siobhan Carolan and the Staff of the Morning Star for running a great show on the night. Another great reason to support local businesses. Well done to the Boyne Valley and District Darts League also, ar feabhas ar fad.

Something else that Seapoint Golf Links likes to capitalise on is when Golfers manage to get Holes in 1 on the course. Well done to Brian Smith who has done so on the 2nd Hole. Meanwhile the Co. Louth Golf Club hosted a successful Captain’s Drive In.

PAUL LANNON RIP
They say you should never meet your hero as same encounter can invariably end in disappointment. Well, when we met Paul, we knew that here was the classic exception that proves the rule.
Here was a man, in the game of life, that was dealt as cruel a hand that any person could ever possibly be given and yet he played on, pulled all possible aces from up his slieve (aka Sandra, Neighbours, friends, his doggies, et al) and actually turned this wretched MND into some sort of positive.
He was an organiser, a thinker, an intellectual, but most of all, an outright gentleman. He loved as much as he was loved and his company was a pleasure to behold.
Kilkenny is accustomed to taking trophies back to it’s county. Well in Paul, we plucked this wonderful trophy from them and, thanks to Sandra, we held onto him.
God’s rest Paul, thanks for reintroducing us to cycling, thanks for your generosity, thanks for helping us all to appreciate the little things in life. Heck, thanks for allowing us to call you a friend.
All our love and prayers.
ORLA WALSH RIP
God’s rest to Orla Walsh, who was also taken from this world, way, way too early.
Orla, formerly Giles from Whiteriver, and formerly of Howth Road, Dublin, passed away on 2nd April. A nurse by profession and an absolute lady by nature. She died peacefully at her home, which was so fitting as she was there with her beloved husband, Martin (a former Tenure NS Parent’s Council chairman)and her four pride and joys, aka, her daughters, Shaunna, Niamh (a noted Juvenile footballer with Naomh Mairtin), Cliona and Aoife.
Orla will be sadly missed by her husband, daughters, son-inlaw Mark, granddaughters Leah and Paige, Dad Eanna, Mam Brigid, brothers John, Enda, Padraig and Colm, sister Eileen, brothers in law, sisters in law, extended family and a large circle of friends.
And on behalf of all in the parish, let me convey our deepest sympathies to all of the above, particularly her nearest and dearest.
MARY DUNNE RIP
The death of Mary Dunne has also taken place. A woman I had the pleasure of knowing all my life. A woman whose long and distinguished life will be recalled in next week’s column. In the meantime, RIP Mary and predeceased husband Paddy and son, Jim and deepest condolences to the big, beautiful family you’ve left behind.

Residents and visitors can pick up copies of the illustrated walking map at the Hub. Whether embarking on a leisurely stroll or delving into the village’s history, the map offers something for everyone, from seasoned adventurers to families looking for a day out.
LEDWIDGE EXHIBITION
An exhibition of paintings on the poet Francis Ledwidge by Sean Tiernan has opened in County Library Navan and runs until April 22nd.
Sean grew up in Slane, Co Meath and from an early stage showed an interest in drawing and in clay modelling. This was encouraged by his father who provided him with clay from the local brickworks. He first took up painting under the guidance of Henry Healy RHA in the 1960s and found that he responded to Henry’s loose style of painting and his evocation of image through colour and tone.
While he paints urban scenes and seascape, from his background in Slane and the countryside around, he has a particular empathy with landscape and animals.
He exhibits in leading galleries in Ireland and has frequently exhibited at the RHA Annual Summer Exhibition, in Oireachtas Exhibitions and with the New English Art Club at the Pall Mall Galleries in London. His work is in private and commercial collections at home and abroad. Corporate collections include; Swiss Embassy, Irish Management Institute and Aer Rianta.

Following his Funeral Mass at Saint Mary`s Chapel in Julianstown Paddy was laid to Rest at Moorechurch Graveyard.
STEDALT CROSS
There is a great danger of a road traffic accident occurring in the vicinity of Stedalt Cross. With so much traffic meeting here at the busy junction of three roads and also traffic coming in and out of the Avenue leading to Stedalt House; coming out onto a blind corner, there already has been several `near-misses` of vehicles colliding. Stedalt House is currently home to a number of Ukrainian Refugee families and so there are also lots of people including small children, people on scooters and bicycles, etc. coming and going and crossing the dangerous junction at Stedalt Cross.
The speed of many vehicles in this vicinity is also way too fast, particularly as the road from the Stamullen village direction towards Giblockstown and Clinstown is that of a sweeping band around the Avenue entrance and exit of Stedalt House!
KNOW YOUR PARISH
The following is taken from a book titled, `Leaves of History`, which was written by Stamullen Parish Curate, Father Paul Walsh in 1930. `In the townland of Tullog, Ordnance Survey sheet 34, there was in ancient times a chapel of ease belonging to the parish of Stamullen. There is no mention of it in literature before the years 1682-85 when Dopping compiled his Liber Ecclesiarum, but it must have been existing in pre-Reformation times, because the first Protestants didn’t build churches or chapels in the Irish countryside; their business appears rather to have been to allow them to fall.
Bishop Dopping has three notices of the place including the following “Tullock is a chapel of ease belonging to ye church of Stamolin but without curate or maintenance, east of Drogheda and not valued in ye King’s books, church has been ruined since 1641”. The only portion of the chapel of Tullog now remaining in position is a small portion of a single wall, apparently the north side, five or six yards in length and about two feet above ground level. It is remembered in the district that the building was that of a chapel.
A stone which formed the heading of one of the windows of the chapel is now inserted over the entrance to a holy well, situated close to the chapel ruins on the opposite side of the road`.
