DIVISION 1 LEAGUE FINAL

COTTAGE INN 5

FAIR GREEN BAR 2

COTTAGE Inn gained instant revenge for their defeat in the John Speedy Heavey Cup decider the previous week when turning the tables on Fair Green Bar to win the Division 1 league final at Maguires on Saturday night.

This match featured the top two teams in the division all season, with Cottage on top and Fair Green chasing them all the way in second place, but the different format for this final produced a different result.

Laytown-based Cottage got off to a good start and won the first two games through Gary McGrane and Simon Rodgers, before Paddy Stevenson brought Fair Green back into contention with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Jack McGrane.

Davy Rouse edged Cottage further in front with a similar scoreline against Mick Hughes, but Drogheda side Fair Green kept their hopes alive when Kyle Thornton defeated Mark O’Brien 2-0 to make it 3-2 overall at the interval.

That was as good as it got for Fair Green, however, as two straight 2-0 wins for Tony Byrne and Derek ‘Killer’ Caffrey sealed the deal and clinched the Division 1 title for Cottage Inn. Overall they were very deserving winners in a game that was played in great spirit by both teams.

Afterwards the league committee made various presentations, with Kyle Thornton of Fair Green Bar winning the Man of the Match award. Robert Smith and Ian Lowthe were the markers on duty and the caller was Richie Timmons. Thanks go to the Maguire’s management, staff and club committee for hosting this final.

The Premier Division decider between Mariner and Lantern Bar takes place in Slane House this coming Saturday at 9:30pm and all support is welcome.
