Two months for having drugs

A 25-year-old man who used cannabis to manage his epilepsy has received a two-month jail sentence for possession of drugs.

Nebojsa Rasic, Priest Lane, Drogheda, pleaded guilty to four counts of Section 3 possession of drugs. Charges of possession for sale or supply were withdrawn by the State.

Gda Tom Sheridan gave evidence of searching a motor vehicle on June 4, 2022. The defendant was the sole occupier.

The charges concerned drugs in the amounts of €578 cannabis, €60 cocaine, €52 cannabis, and €9 cannabis resin.

There were 60 previous conviction­s including for possession of drugs and drug driving.

Gda Sheridan told solicitor James Allen that during an interview Mr Rasic said the drugs were for his personal use and not for sale.

Mr Allen continued that his client suffered from epilepsy. He used cannabis to manage the symptoms and that led to harder drugs. He was conscious that he needed to deal with issues.

The defendant was seeking credit for his pleas of guilty. He gave an early explanatio­n to gardaí and co-operated.

Judge McKiernan said there was a ‘significan­t’ number of previous conviction­s.
