THERE was great sadness in Enniscorthy over the weekend following the news of the sudden and untimely death of ‘gentle giant’ Christopher Butler (29) of 19 Fr Murphy Park. Christopher, pictured right, was sadly found dead at his home on Friday afternoon. Family, friends and neighbours gathered at St Aidan’s Cathedral yesterday (Monday) morning to join Christopher’s heartbroken family, parents Owen and Teresa and sister Robyn, to bid him a fond and final farewell. Speaking to the congregation, Christopher’s uncle Dick described a quiet young man who was happy in life.
‘Owen only asked me the other day, did we spoil him too much?’ said Dick. ‘I don’t think it’s possible to spoil a child too much. Money meant nothing to him. He had everything he wanted. I don’t think he could’ve been loved by two nicer people than Owen and Teresa.’
Dick recalled how Christopher would head out helping his father out as he washed windows, always holding the ladder steady for him. ‘You’d always see Owen on top of the ladder and Christopher at the bottom,’ Dick recalled. ‘You’d always hear him shouting up, “You all right, Owen?” Now Christopher is holding that ladder from heaven. He’s looking down and saying to Owen and Teresa, you’re going to be alright.’
During the service, gifts were brought to the altar to represent Christopher’s short life. A CD, wrestling figures, a toy dog to represent his beloved dog Rocky and a plant to represent his green-fingered nature were laid beside his coffin. After the service, Christopher was laid to rest in Enniscorthy Cemetery.
