Strong school spirit for mental health

- BY PÁDRAIG BYRNE

ONE year since launching their ‘I Am Worth It’ mental health booklet which was distributed to 15,000 secondary school students across the county, students from Coláiste Bríde hosted ‘I Am Worth It Week’ at the school to continue their work in the field of teenage mental health.

With mental health being a fast growing issue among young people, staff and students at Coláiste Bríde were determined to keep it to the fore and scheduled a number of events with the hopes of opening up some dialogue on the topic of mental health.

Over the course of the week they hosted ‘ knit and natter classes’ which saw them improve their knitting skills, a lunch time walk and talk and also meditative colouring classes. They also randomly dropped everything to dance at regular intervals during the week to keep the spirits up!

Junior students took part in a body image workshop while the seniors took out some aggression on the drums at a drumming workshop. On the final day, the school raised funds for Pieta House by holding a hotly contested lip-sync battle between students and staff. While the standard was said to be very high, the teachers from the Irish department eventually walked away with the bragging rights!

The students also attempted to make it a world record-breaking event by organising over 700 students simultaneously walking ten paces with their shoes on the wrong feet..something which apparently sounds a lot easier than it actually is!

The massive effort of the students at Coláiste Bríde on the subject of mental health was formally recognised as they were presented with one of four annual South East Radio/Talbot Hotel Junior Outstanding Achievement Awards.

They now look forward to attending the gala ball in January where they hope to scoop the top prize.
